The Balsam Tree: Commiphora gileadensis

O Balsam tree so fine,
gift of King Solomon
from Shebas Queen, so kind!

Your astounding beauty
reveals secrets untold,
God-given healing tree.
Legend professes that
you inhabited the
En-gedi oasis,
and Gilead, maybe.

What enigma is this,
cutting and piercing you
brings healing balm and bliss?
A prophetic sign of
Christs balm-redeeming kiss
to humankind upon
the tree, no one shall miss.

O Balsam tree so fair,
your gift of heaven scents,
perfume from God to share.

Lent 2001

When we journey through the Lenten gate,
are we not astounded by the weight
of humankind's perpetual hate,
which nailed Jesus to his mortal fate?

Pages of history far and wide,
shall never adequately describe
Jesus suffering and crucified,
forever drawing us to his side.

The propaganda of tribe and creed,
economics exploit and breed greed
a whirlwind harvest of bitter seed,
Christ's Passion lives on, his wounds still bleed.

Listen to the Holocaust victim call,
remember the two-third's poor and small
break down every dividing wall.
In God's kingdom, there is room for all.

Times Rising

Times rising
out of this
dead corpse,
empty tomb and
shattered dreams.

Times rising
setting the
precedent for
all times
and places.

Times rising
the end is
not as it seems.
The end is
not the end.

Times rising
now the eternal
to be always.
Holy presences
forever alive.

Times rising
new leaves of
healing for all,
never dying
with the fall.

Times rising
in every
new beginning
of faith, hope
and love.

Times rising
for each child,
woman and man,
each creature dwells
in forever day.

Jesus, a lawyer asked of you

Jesus, a lawyer asked of you,

What must I do today

For lasting life from God so true

And gain heav-ens blest way?

Turning to writings from the law,

What do you read inside?

But loving God with truth and awe

And your neighbour be-side.

Jesus, then telling of a man

Struck by thieves and half-dead;

A Levite and priest gave no hand

Left their neighbour in-stead.

Travling by, a Sam-ar-i-tan

Full of love and mercy

Was willing to do all one can

For a neighbour in-need.
